About Us
Why I built this.
Eating out shouldn't be difficult with a food allergy. It's a legal requirement for British restaurants to know what is in their food. But that doesn't mean you're going to get a good service once you ask the question.
I built Good Food Allergies to help me when choosing where to go with my son who has a peanut allergy. I'd normally spend significant time searching review sites for other people's experiences of a restaurant we may be interested in going to. Or I'd bookmark a social media post only to forget to go back to it weeks later. All the info is already out there. I just wanted to make it more accessible so I set about developing what will hopefully become the UK's largest database of allergy friendly venues.
Frequently asked questions
- How does it work?
-
The GFA Agent goes out to the web to find what people with food allergies have got to say about resturants the world over and then makes an assessment on their suitability for eating there. At the moment it's limited to the areas I have selected. In time I hope to develop it so you can search for resturants, hotels or takeaways anywhere.
- Are the listings accurate?
-
We collate real allergy reviews from 3 sources as well as giving users the chance to submit their own reviews to make an assessment on whether or not they're Good For Allergies. We can only go on the content out there. We haven't tried the venues ourselves.
- Do you charge for access?
-
Not at the minute. However, this is a beta website. Computing power is expensive. I have released this with data on a handful of cities. If I expand it I will need to cover the costs somehow. It takes a lot for our agent to scour the web to find the relevant reviews that are often hidden away and within user interfaces not easily searchable in a web browser.
